Baby On the Way
Donna and Vince Aylmer were visiting their doctor in Gloucester, England for a routine ultrasound. Donna, who is 49 years old, and her husband Vince, who is 55 years old, already had three children. They were excited to welcome another member to their family. They had no idea what the doctor was about to tell them, though.
During their ultrasound, the doctor informed Donna and Vince that they were expecting twins. They were both healthy babies. The Aylmers were shocked. How were they going to handle two more babies on top of their other three children, Georg, Jordan, and Chynna? Though the news was shocking, they still celebrated the big news.
The Babies Are Born
Donna gave birth to the twins on January 16, 1997. It was a joyous day, but they gave their parents another shock. Though they were twins, the babies had different skin colors! One baby, Lucy, had a pale white complexion with red hair and blue eyes while the other, Maria, had brown hair and a darker complexion.
Same But Different
As with any twins, their mom dressed them in matching outfits. Strangers would be confused as to why the girls were dressed as twins but looked completely different. Lucy would be mistaken as Irish, while Maria would be mistaken as from the Caribbean.
Finding Their Identity
At the age of seven, the twins declared that they didn’t want to be dressed the same anymore. Since they looked so different, they didn’t know why they had to wear the same clothing. They told their mom that they didn’t feel like twins due to their difference in looks. It was at this time that the girls started to find their own identities.
No Tricks or Mistakes
With some sets of twins, it can be hard to tell the two of them apart. That wasn’t the case with Lucy and Maria. They were never able to play the classic switcheroo trick in school. The girls were happy to be seen as individuals, but that didn’t mean they didn’t enjoy the perks that come with being twins.
Night and Day
The story of the twins’ different skin colors was picked up by the media on their 18th birthday. Inside Edition did an interview where Lucy said, “Maria was outgoing whilst I was the shy one.” Lucy was introverted, but started coming out of her shell as they got older. Maria was happy to strike up conversations with strangers. This difference in personality prevented the twins from being as close as other twins. It wasn’t until they grew older that they would become closer.
Troubled With Their Looks
Lucy and Maria both had some personal qualms about how they looked. Maria despised her curly hair and would even cry about it. Lucy didn’t like her pale white skin because she would be made fun of and told she was adopted. Lucy concluded that she got her pale complexion from her grandmother.
Was There a Mistake?
The chances of giving birth to biracial twins is one in 500. Of course, this couldn’t have been known by the ultrasound. Aylmer’s other children had darker skin than Lucy, but lighter skin than Maria.
What’s the Possibility?
For biracial twins to be born, the parents must be descendants of two different races. Vince is Caucasian while Donna is half-white and half-Jamaican. Their previous children had mixed skin colors, but it was a complete shock to see the twins’ two completely different and separate colors.
The Science Behind Biracial Twins
Lucy and Maria are considered to be non-identical twins. This means that they formed from two separate eggs in the womb, rather than one egg splitting in two. Since Donna carried both genes for black and white skin, there was a high probability that one of her children could have a completely different skin color than her other children.
Not only are the twins’ looks different, but their personalities are different too. Lucy enjoys a grungy style with dark makeup while Maria likes a boho-chic look. Lucy told Inside Edition that she thinks if they had looked the same, they may have been closer growing up.
Lucy told Inside Edition, “Now we have grown older, even though we still look so different, the bond between us is much stronger.” Not only are they sisters, but they consider themselves to be best friends too. They love telling people that they are twins.
Off to College
Staying true to their different personalities, the girls went separate ways when it came to going to college. Maria studies law at Cheltenham College while Lucy studies art and design at Gloucester. Even though they are different, they still love each other.
Of course, there were some skeptics out there when the girls told people about her twin. The girls are used to hearing that they are lying and aren’t really twins from strangers. It doesn’t matter, though. The only thing that matters is that they love each other.
To prove skeptics wrong, they will sometimes show their birth certificate. “These friends sure don’t have a lot of trust…” Maria said in an interview. Twins are a phenomenon in itself, but when it comes to biracial twins it’s even harder to wrap your head around.
Even though the twins look different and have opposite personalities, they still experience the telepathic bond other twins experience. It isn’t as strong as other twins claim it to be, but they said they have felt each other’s pain at some points.
Despite their different looks and personalities, the girls do share some similarities. One of these is their tall and slender build. They could both be models! They also know that they can always count on each other.
There Are Others
Marcia and Millie Biggs are also biracial twins. Unlike Maria and Lucy, this set of twins are almost inseparable. They share the same interests, such as gymnastics, science, and math.
Kalani and Jarani Dean are also biracial twins and were featured in Today magazine. Their mother is white while their father is black. Their mother said in an interview, “They’re the same, just different colors.” She believes that Jarani is a symbol against racism.
Joanne and Larry often talked about who their twins would take after, their mother with white skin or their father with brown skin. It turns out they took after both of them! “No one ever believes they are twins because the don’t look alike at all. They don’t even look like brother and sister, let alone twins,” Joanne says.
A Rare Set of Twins
Kian and Remee are a very rare set of twins. Both their mother and father were mixed with white mothers and black fathers. Sciences claims that this set of twins are one in a million. One was born with dark skin and brown eyes while the other has blue eyes and white skin. Though they are twins, they couldn’t be any more different.
James and Daniel are different in almost every way. Not only is their skin color different, but their personalities are completely opposite. James is gay with dark skin and loves going to school. Daniel is straight with white skin and hates going to school. “It was hard to believe they were even brothers, let alone twins,” their mother said.
The Ng family can be considered a rainbow family. Their family members are from all over the world. It’s no wonder that their twins Viviana and Dennis were born biracial. Their genes are made up of African, Hawaiian, Chinese, Hispanic, and European. Their mother said, “Some people ask are they mine, are they twins or were they conceived naturally. When I’m with my husband they are like, ‘Oh, now I see.’”
Growing up with different skin colors comes with some different struggles. This was the case for Breana Cincotta, who would be called “albino” for her skin being so light. Thankfully the teasing stopped, as the twins grew older.
Identical but Biracial
An even crazier phenomenon is when twins are identical, but also biracial. That is the case with Amelia and Jasmine who are both black and white. “When they were born, we were flabbergasted, even the doctors couldn’t believe it. They look like they’re different races,” their mother explained. They definitely wouldn’t have any trouble telling the two apart from each other.
An Incredible Family
Talk about lucky chances. The Spooner family has two sets of biracial twins! The two sets of twins were born seven years apart. If people keep reproducing outside of their race, geneticists believe that we will see many more biracial twins.
The Cunningham twins were considered medical marvels when they were born in Ohio. However, some people didn’t seem to think so. The twins experienced being called derogatory terms and their parents have been criticized. Some people would even ask how they could do such a horrible thing to their children.
Embracing Their Differences
This set of fraternal twins couldn’t look any more different. “Usually when people are interracial, they feel as if they have to identify with one or the other and I’d like them to embrace it even though they look completely different. So hopefully that will encourage them to do that as they get older,” their mother said.
A Striking Difference
Kendall and Baylee shocked their parents when they were born by the difference of their skin tones. Their parents are of European and Jamaican descent, which explains why they are biracial. “One thing I know for sure is that family and friends won’t ever struggle to tell them apart,” their father joked.
Kyle and Hannah
When Kyle and Hannah found out they were pregnant with twins, people joked about the twins being born with different skin colors. They laughed off the matter, until the twins were born. They were shocked! “I can’t walk down the aisle at the supermarket without getting stopped,” Hannah said in an interview. People question them everywhere they go.
Carole and Brian were trying to have another baby for a long time. After a number of miscarriages, they finally became pregnant with twins. Not just ordinary twins, though, biracial twins! They couldn’t believe how lucky they were.
Imagine the surprise these parents felt when their baby came out with light skin. Both of baby Daniel’s parents are from African heritage, so they were shocked to see they had a white baby. Daniel isn’t biracial though, instead he has a genetic mutation he inherited from his mother’s side.
The DiMarco Twins
Nyle and Nico DiMarco are biracial twins who were both born deaf. Nyle went on to win America’s Next Top Model and became a model and actor. His brother Nico is a successful DJ. They are both activists in their community and work to raise awareness of deafness.
