18. Finding Food
It wasn’t long before he realized that the food he brought definitely wasn’t enough, and it didn’t occur to him until he had hunger pangs. While Maine forests certainly have a lot of vegetation, there’s not a whole lot to eat. Some plants are edible, but there were only enough for a few days’ worth of food. Once it ran out, he was back to square one. It would have been different if he brought something to hunt or fish with but he didn’t.

As he continued to walk, desperately trying to find food, he stumbled upon the first bite of meat he had seen since he left—a dead bird on the road, which he consumed raw. Despite the meal, he knew he would need a more stable food source, but even Christopher didn’t think he would do what came next.
