Discovering bluish nails, or cyanosis, can be a bit unsettling. Hypoxemia, which is a lack of oxygen in the blood, is usually the cause. If you have poor circulation, your skin, including the skin underneath your nails, can turn blue. When your blood doesn’t have the oxygen it needs, it tends to have fewer red blood cells, which is why it has a bluish tinge. If you also have bluish-purple lips or undereyes, there’s a good chance you have hypoxemia. Even though it isn’t life-threatening, you should discuss it with your doctor.
